How to Plan A Southern Minnesota Barn Wedding

Planning a Southern Minnesota Barn Wedding is so much FUN! Who doesn’t love the idea of a party in the barn?

Here’s what you need to know!

Plan for Wild Weather: Minnesota is known for it’s crazy and wild weather and temperature swings! Pick a venue that has a backup option for your ceremony. Make sure you venue has restrooms, BONUS if they are in the barn! Here at the Barn at Ballard Creek, our brand new restrooms are attached on the main level (and more to come!) so that even if the storms are brewing outside, you can stay dry and beautiful in your gorgeous wedding dress when need to use the restroom!

Heat and Cold: Find out if your venue includes fans and heaters. Some venues offer them at an additional fee. At the Barn at Ballard Creek, we include both cooling fans and heaters in our rental at no additional fee to our couples! We utilize gorgeous outdoor spaces as well and lots of natural ventilation. You can also avoid the hottest months of the year like July and early August to avoid excessive heat.

Shoes and Attire: We have had all styles of weddings here at the Barn at Ballard Creek! We have seen formal, black tie attire as well as jeans and cowboy boots! Our Southern Minnesota Wedding Venue is very versatile and can be dressed up or down to fit your dream wedding vision. We suggest letting your guests know that we are a REAL farm in the country. We utilize gravel and cement for walkways and suggest wedges, booties, boots or flats. Otherwise, many guests bring shoes to change into if they want to be fancier in the barn!

Getting Your Steps In: Most Southern Minnesota Barn Venues are located in the country on beautiful old farm sites. Most parking lots are not paved and most barn venues have gorgeous, fast lawns, woods and ponds that allow you to get your walking in! Prepare to walk a little extra when you attend a barn wedding in Southern Minnesota. Some venues offer a shuttle or golf cart and also have parking closer to the barn for those who need it. We have ample parking close to the barn and are in the process of purchasing a golf cart, too!
